5. A MENTOR
“The quest for a mentor moves well beyond a wishful desire; it is a longing and an actual developmental need. The longing for a mentor is a tangible expression of a desire to fill a need”. “The mentoring process can be used to facilitate an individual’s (a mentee’s) direction in life and the formation of character that will produce an effective individual”. While behaviorism changes people from the outside-in, the mentoring process picks up where behaviorism fails because in mentoring, people are changed from the inside-out. Since the mentoring process consist of forming the overall person and character development in particular, lets look briefly at who a mentor is before you choose one
You can't have a “one-fit all” mentor.
A mentor is someone you can look up to in a particular area/field of your life.
A mentor most times is someone who has been in your field and most times has conquered the challenges in your field.
A mentor is someone who has done once or twice of what you want to do (or what you are doing) and is succeeding.
Usually a mentor must have the experience you need, must have proof(s).
A mentor is not intimidated by your vision/accomplishments.
A Mentor gives you direction (someone who will walk with you and be a wise guide to you).
The duty of a Mentor is to give you advice.
A mentor can also correct you, chastise you and instruct you.
A mentor must be someone you respect ('so much').
A mentor is someone you can be open to; to trust & share deep things with (even if they things are your dirty linens that you wouldn't discuss with anyone or hang on the rope outside for sun).
A mentor can be your coach.
One key job of a mentor is to supervise you.
In choosing a mentor, you need someone above you & you may require/need someone at your level who will challenge or inspire you.
ONE QUICK STORY
Esther was a young lady who lived with her uncle because she had lost her parents. Mordecai , her uncle took her to Hegai who was recruiting young beautiful ladies for the king as bride. These young ladies were to appear before the king for a beauty parade whilst the king made his choice from amongst them. Hegai mentored Esther for a period of 12 months until the beauty contest began. Mordecai would once in a while come to learn how Esther was faring. Esther did all that Hegai had commanded her and she became the last girl standing. That is how she became the queen (the queen Esther we read in the bible) because of mentoring…(bible event, Esther 2:5-18…re-told).
